JOB DEFINITION
The Process Technician controls, operates, or tends equipment in which a chemical change or reaction takes place in the processing of industrial or consumer products. Typical equipment used include: K-52, K54, Kettles and Thinning Tanks, raw material storage and blend tanks or batch treating equipment. This role reports to a Production Manager and is responsible to ensure the daily production plan is met. Responsibilities include operation of kettles, unloading of raw materials, loading and drumming of finished products, maintenance of equipment, preparing and maintaining process records, sampling and quality testing, and other general production activities or duties as assigned.
MAJOR SPECIFIC PROCESSES include the following (other duties may be assigned)
- Using raw materials as listed on the batch tickets, and recording data onto the batch ticket, raw material lot numbers as printed on the containers.
- Follows specific directions on batch tickets for manufacturing and informs a supervisor or manager of any deviations from the instructions, while in the process of loading, processing and performing quality checks on the process.
- Communicates ideas, problems or situations by means of direct contact, work order, or an employee suggestion.
- Follows all plant work instructions, standard operating procedures, ISO procedures and rules.
Staging Materials
- Operates cooling water on all thinning tank condensers.
- Runs required tests (viscosity, reduced viscosity, ph level, color, specific gravity, etc.)
- Operates forklift, hostler truck, and yard tractor to load and unload trailers, and move materials within the plant facility.
- Pre-stages raw materials and packaging per the batch card/slip for efficiency of process to ensure materials ready.
- Puts materials into drums, totes, or tank wagons or transfers to storage area to meet order requirements.
- Records quantity filled and material location for tracking purposes.
- Examines products or work for obvious non-conformance to specifications. Removes any materials that do not conform to specifications for re-work.
Producing and Monitoring a Batch
- Starts pumps and agitators, turns valves, or moves controls of processing equipment to admit, transfer, filter, or mix chemicals, or to drain specified amounts of materials, impurities, or rating agents to or from equipment to further process the batch.
- Reads plant specifications to and weighs, measures, counts, or mixes prescribed quantities of materials to manufacture a batch and use hand or power tools to further process materials.
- Adjusts production equipment controls to regulate temperature, pressure and time of prescribed reaction, according to knowledge of equipment and process to maintain system within specified operating conditions.
- Records data from instruments and gauges concerning temperature, materials used, and weight on the batch ticket in order to maintain historical and quality records.
- Operates or tends auxiliary equipment, such as filters, overhead cranes, and pumps to further process materials.
- Draws sample of products to test for specific testing according to the batch ticket to aid in process adjustments and maintain production standards.
- Patrols work area to detect leaks and equipment malfunctions, and monitor operating conditions. Notifies maintenance and a supervisor of equipment malfunctions to ensure timely and quality production.
